So this blog topic today has been inspired by a variety of reasons, the first of which is that it's just near and dear to my heart. Since I work in a gym that constantly sells Personal Training to customers, I've done a lot of thinking about just what it is that makes a TRAINER worth the money (*ahem*, or not worth it). I've also had the experience of traveling around to many different gyms and witnessing the major mistakes that some trainers out there are making. So whether you are a Personal Trainer yourself, a current or future customer, or are just thinking about the possibility of hiring one to help you with your health journey; I highly suggest you read today's blog and educate yourself on a few key points first. 1. Knowing what to ask..When sitting down with a trainer for the first time, it is extremely important to ask them the right questions. Don't just believe everything they tell you.. do some probing to find out more information on what degree they have, what specialty certifications they have, and what kind of clients they have worked with in the past. And a big one: ASK IF THEY HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH INJURIES. I can't stress how important this is. Even if you are the healthiest person on the planet (which if you are completely injury/pain free give me your secret)- your trainer should be educated enough to notice your imbalances (we're all full of them) and be able to work on correcting them to PREVENT injuries in the future. Even though all working trainers SHOULD HAVE THEIR CERTIFICATIONS - (ask this question first and foremost, and please for the love of God... walk away immediately if the answer is no) you really cannot learn to be a GREAT trainer from a book. Ask them what experience they have working with injuries? Past clients? Trust me, a trainer that can help you with your past, or current injuries as well as help to prevent future problems is worth their weight in PURE GOLD. 2. what exactly is a trainer really supposed to do??...It is important for you to understand the REAL job roles of a Personal Trainer, in order for you to understand what the large majority of those working in this field are doing WRONG. Whether you are currently training, or thinking about training, or working as a PT yourself... i urge you to read this next part. Now, understand that I am not speaking from a place of resentment nor am I trying to bash anyone's unique training style. I have a great deal of love and respect for this industry. The purpose of all of this ranting is to show you how WORTH WHILE the investment you make in training is. Now let's get down to it. Please note, that every health establishment/gym is obviously different, but for the most part these should apply almost anywhere you go. What are you SUPPOSED to get when you purchase training? - An individualized assessment including talking about goals, previous experiences with exercise, past or current injuries, any medical conditions you may have, and a movement screening of some sort to discover any imbalances you may have (we all have some). - A Personal Trainer that will take time to develop a PROGRESSIVE, RELEVANT, CUSTOM PROGRAM for you to follow both with and WITHOUT them in the gym. (it's important for you to learn what to do by yourself too, you know) And you really SHOULD be given some sort of written workouts/paperwork to practice or use on your own time. - A Personal Trainer that takes measurements of some sort (body fat, BMI, actual measurements, weight, etc) and keeps a progress log for you so that you can see what you are getting from your investment. Health is never a wasted investment, and a satisfied client will generally want to keep coming back. - A Personal Trainer that checks in on you, asks how you're feeling, modifies workouts as necessary, coordinates workouts with what your GOALS are, and does goal evaluation and re-setting at least once a month. (appx) - If they have a certification, this trainer can also help you with meal planning and guidelines (NOT A DIET)- and help you make small adjustments as necessary to supplement your workout program. - Active, productive, and smart TRAINING SESSIONS that are based around progressive training and achieving YOUR goals. **THE ATTENTION OF THE TRAINER SHOULD BE FULLY FOCUSED ON YOU!! I cannot stress this point enough. As a PT myself I can tell you I don't even look at my PHONE during sessions. Not only have you (the client) paid for this trainer's HOUR, but you also need their full attention when performing exercises because you could really hurt yourself by just moving in the wrong direction. Demand more for your money and don't be afraid to say anything. - Unlimited support and encouragement, and flexible availability to hear your concerns or struggles. What do you ACTUALLY get in most cases? (Speaking from firsthand experience.... sadly) -A person who has recently/just obtained their PT certification and heard that training was something you can "make a lot of money doing"- So here they are, and here you are. - A Trainer that simply takes your money and trains you on the spot using a generic program that they repeat with all their clients and isn't personal or relevant to YOU and YOUR GOALS!! (I see this CONSTANTLY) - A Trainer that works out a lot themselves and doesn't program for their clients but instead just figures their clients will be fine doing the same things that they THEMSELVES do. "I know how to train because I train myself" -WRONG. This goes for "instagram fitness models/trainers" AS WELL, PEOPLE. - A Trainer that is on their phone for more than half the session, barely pays attention to you, and never takes progress measurements or does reevaluations. - A Trainer that doesn't do an initial assessment properly, doesn't ask you about your injuries or medical conditions, and will hurt you (unknowingly) if you let them. Okay so you get the point....right? I know i've done some rambling here but if something hits home maybe it will stick in your memory and help you in the future. Understand that I am not trying to lower your opinion of Personal Trainers and create distrust. Instead, I am trying to stress how amazingly VALUABLE a GOOD PT can be. Speaking from a PT's perspective: I don't want people to experience a bad trainer and think that that's what we are all like. Don't lose hope. Give us another chance. Generally if you find someone that genuinely CARES and loves what they do, you will generally be able to classify them into the first category of "what trainers are supposed to do". Use the above knowledge i have given you and begin your search for the perfect trainer to fit YOU. AND REMEMBER: Investing in your health is never something you will regret.
